International Committee for a Humanistic Astrology
At a time when astrology is arousing the interest of a fast growing number of eager thinking individuals, young and old, this Committee is established on a non-organizational basis to focus attention upon humanistic in-depth approach to this ancient, yet ever-changing method of attunement to the rhythmic order of the Universe.
A Humanistic astrology is an astrology conceived essentially as a language using the cyclic motions of celestial bodies as symbols which can convey to human beings a direct and practically applicable understanding of the basis patterns of the bio-psychic processes which are the foundation of individual and collective existence. Such an understanding can help individuals to evaluate the meaning and value of their experiences in terms of the total pattern of their individual life, seen then as a consistent whole, structured from birth to death by innate tendencies. Thanks to such an understanding, seemingly fortuitous events and crises can be seen as phases and perhaps turning-points in the continuous flow of individual existence. They acquire thus a new meaning, and the individual person can feel himself more secure, at peace with the universe and a participant - - together with all other men and living beings - - in the vast evolution of humanity, of the Earth-as-a-whole, and ultimately of the Cosmos.
Humanistic astrology is an astrology aiming at the fulfilment of the individual person. It deals with persons rather than with events. It represent a "holistic" rather than an analytical approach to existence. It implies a philosophy of existence, a basic psychology in which depths and heights are included within an integral understanding of life, for which good-and-bad, fortunate-and-unfortunate, either-or valuations are mostly irrelevant, or at most only superficial. It is not meant to appeal to intellectual curiosity or even to the so-called scientific mentality engrossed inquantitative statistical research.
However, Humanistic astrology is not "against" other types of serious astrological practice ; it sees them as valuable in their own spheres and in response to demands of most of the general public - - and there are today as many types of astrology as there are types of psychology or medicine. But this Committee insists that an in-depth philosophical approach to astrology should be fully recognized for what it is in order to really meet the expectations of our present-day young people who are now being fascinated by the vistas which they feel astrology can open the intuitive and inward seeking mind.
The I.C.H.A. hopes to establish valuable forms of communication between the persons who approach astrology in such a humanistically oriented manner, and to make better known to individuals who are ready for it the deeper possibilities of expansion of consciousness and of integration of the personality which the study of astrology can open to anyone familiar with its symbolism and its qualitative means of communication. Its membership is open to anyone who recognizes the value of this approach. No dues are required, but contributions will be gratefully accepted to cover the expenses of mailing and the publication of material to elucidate this approach to astrology. The first booklet of a series being written by Rudhyar will be available in mid-summer 1969.
